LoRaWAN Network Boosts Conservation in Maasai Mara

A collaboration between The Safari Collection Footprint Trust, Narok County Government, 51 Degrees, Cisco, Actility and the Connected Conservation Foundation is deploying LoRaWAN technology for wildlife conservation and sustainable tourism in the Maasai Mara.

The reserve, home to key species like the Eastern black rhino, cheetah, and wildebeest, faces challenges from overtourism, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. To address this, the Maasai Mara Conservation Centre uses EarthRanger software and LoRaWAN to monitor wildlife, ranger patrols, and tourism in real-time.

LoRa sensors track tourist activity, including overcrowding and speeding, which can disturb wildlife. These sensors also monitor rhino movements, offering vital data for conservation efforts. With over 300,000 visitors annually, the collaboration showcases how technology and community-driven conservation can protect this vital ecosystem.
